During a break from my seat on the flight to Hong Kong, I opened the window shutter to peek outside. Imagine my surprise when I saw land! I thought we were flying over the Pacific, and the first thought that came to mind was that this was Hawaii. I saw what looked like a volcano in the background. But snow? No, someone told me it was Alaska. After digging around on Google Maps, I was able to identify the places.
Sukoi Bay (not Sukhoi) in southern Alaska, just north of Kodiak Island:
And then, in the distance is Augustine Island, the volcano:
Finally, flying over Katmai National Park. I felt like I was filming Planet Earth. Pristine, untouched, and snow-covered. It was a breathtaking sight.
